This project involved the complete redesign and replacement of the existing electrical, instrumentation, SCADA, security and control systems at this 60 year-old, 68 MGD facility. Grubb Engineering was the Prime Consultant for this project. The existing switchgear, motor control center, ductbank system and SCADA system were analyzed to determine condition and salvage value. GEI designed the replacement of the existing electrical distribution including 5kV motor control centers for new high service pump motors and 600V motor control center for new well pump motors; designed both local controls and SCADA controls for all pumps; designed high service pump discharge valve controls as well as controls for flow control valve; designed power distribution and controls for replacement chlorine and fluoride feed systems; designed generator backup for chemical feed systems to include chlorine scrubber system; and designed SCADA system complete replacement and security upgrades at this 60+ year-old, 68 MGD facility. The tank rehabilitation project for this location was completed as a separate project by GEI as a sub-consultant which required extensive coordination between projects.
The high service pumps required special attention since they were located inside an existing building with space constraints. Special equipment and permitting was needed since the building expansion included chorine gas storage. The site is located in the San Antonio River Improvements Overlay district which required special attention.
