Planning and System Studies

Computer Aided Studies
Engineering services include computer aided planning and design studies of transmission and distribution facilities for utilities and industrial plants. In house software includes network fault analysis and load flow, structural analysis and sag and tension programs.

Predominant Kilowatt Usage Study
Electricity used for manufacturing purposes is considered non-taxable under the State of Texas, Sales and Use Tax Code 151.317. Where a single meter is used for manufacturing and commercial (taxable) purposes, a study must be performed and submitted to the utility for sales tax exemption. Grubb Engineering is able to provide this study, which is certified by a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
Panel Design and/or Assembly
A cooperative effort of the Engineering and Technical Services Divisions provides custom products ranging from state-of-the art annunciation equipment to sophisticated relay and control panels. Each component is acceptance tested upon receipt from the vendor and completed panels are tested for proper circuitry and insulation integrity. Complete documentation of test results and reproducible drawings are supplied with each panel assembly.

POWER QUALITY ANALYSIS
Grubb Engineering, Inc. (GEI) utilizes a Reliable Power Meters, RPM Omega recorder to monitor and capture the electrical parameters on a power system, including loads, voltage events, power consumption and overall power quality. Industry now recognizes power quality engineering as an important discipline. GEI is no exception. That is why we have a group of engineers that review all of the data collected by our field service technicians and make observations and recommendations. The power measurement instrument, power treatment methods, and an information base is now available to permit companies, as yours, not only to determine the level of vulnerability to power disturbances but to influence their rate of occurrence as well. The electrical utility company, or electrical supplier, has long been viewed as the major source of power disturbances. This is not generally true. Electrical problems within the facility, large switching loads (i.e. VFD’s, UPS systems, rectifiers, computer servers), and the stress placed upon the electrical system by nonlinear loads, are responsible for most power disturbances. Finding solutions for power problems is not simply desirable, it is mandatory. The economic survival of the facility depends in the reliable operation of its equipment.
The monitor can be installed and left to monitor for an extended and predetermined amount of time. The RPM has its own internal hard drive, which continuously samples data and records the information on the hard drive for later retrieval by a technician using a laptop computer. In most cases, the monitor can be setup without power interruption to the loads being monitored. Split-core current transformers are used to allow the connection to the circuit being monitored without causing loss of power to the load. After installation of the monitoring equipment, protective panels are reinstalled and all precautions are taken to leave the work area as safe as possible during monitoring.
A comprehensive report is generated for you, the customer, and a cover letter detailing points of interest is attached to allow for easier interpretation of the data reported. Assistance, by a GEI employee, is supplied in the interpretation of the data if necessary.
